Merri-bek BUG have joined the Streets People Love campaign ahead of the 2024 Merri-bek council election. All candidates have been asked to commit to the Streets People Love pledge and complete this survey. Together with Walk on Merri-bek we have created scorecards for each candidate taking into account:

Louisa Bassini is a Victorian Socialist candidate in Bulleke-bek Ward.
The Victorian Socialists have sound policy on active transport but no track record in Merri-bek.

Helen Breier is a Labor Party candidate in Bulleke-bek Ward.
The Labor Party in Merri-bek have a new policy platform which seeks to introduce additional consultation for Streets for People projects, doesn’t support 30kph trials (although some Labor candidates do) and mentions protected bike lanes in the context of ‘off road networks’. Incumbent Labor Party councillors have not consistently voted to support the implementation of measures from the Merri-bek Transport Strategy although Breier has no personal track record.

Jay Iwasaki is an Australian Greens candidate in Bulleke-bek Ward.
The Greens have a sound active transport policy. Greens councillors have been consistent in implementing measures from the Merri-bek transport strategy that support safe active transport and responding to residents concerns when raised. Iwasaki has experience and interest in measures for greening and is campaigning on active transport issues.

Owen Miller is a Fusion party candidate in Bullek-bek Ward. The Fusion Party is broadly aligned with active transport support but has unclear active transport policies. Miller has taken an interest in local campaigns to improve streets such as Make Lygon Street Sparkle.

Mel Yuani is an independent candidate in Bulleke-bek Ward. Yuan has nominated safer active transport as an important issue in multiple surveys and has an extensive local history in Merri-bek as a local campaigner on greening and improving streets.
