Merri-bek BUG have joined the Streets People Love campaign ahead of the 2024 Merri-bek council election. All candidates have been asked to commit to the Streets People Love pledge and complete this survey. Together with Walk on Merri-bek we have created scorecards for each candidate taking into account:

Sue Bolton. Socialist Alliance candidate in Bababi Djinanang

Sue Bolton is a Socialist Alliance candidate in Bababi Djinanang.
Bolton is an incumbent and has shown broad support for implementing measures from the transport strategy during her term on Council.
The Socialist Alliance policy on active transport is okay and does show awareness of local campaigns and issues, which Bolton has been quick to support when raised during her term.
Bolton has committed to the Streets People Love pledge.

Hassaan Gul is a Labor Party candidate in Bababi Djinanang.
The Labor Party in Merri-bek have a new policy platform which seeks to introduce additional consultation for Streets for People projects, doesn’t support 30kph trials (although some Labor candidates do) and mentions protected bike lanes in the context of ‘off road networks’. Labor Party councillors have not consistently voted to support the implementation of measures from the Merri-bek Transport Strategy although Gul has no personal track record.

According to his survey responses Gul does support reallocating road space to plant trees and improve pedestrian spaces but NOT to create protected bike lanes.

Lynton Michael Jospeh is an independent candidate in Bababi Djinanang. Joseph hasn’t published his policy on active transport, nor is there social media or other sources where a history of supporting or campaigning for active transport can be found.

Lance Sinclair is an Australian Greens candidate in Bababi Djinanang.
The Greens have a sound active transport policy Greens councillors have been consistent in implementing measures from the Merri-bek transport strategy that support safe active transport and responding to residents concerns when raised.

Sinclair has completed the Streets People Love survey.
